On the Ever-Increasing Importance of Advanced Compilers and Programming Tools for High-Performance Computing

I will present recent progress on compilation techniques and programming environments for parallel architectures - in particular for accelerator-based high-performance computing systems. I will also discuss the need for such techniques and tools in support of computational applications, which today push the frontiers of science in almost every discipline. The talk will conclude with experiences from a rotation at the US National Science Foundation, which I have just completed.

Rudolf (Rudi) Eigenmann has worked in the area of compilers in parallel computing since his Ph.D. at ETH Zurich, Switzerland in 1988. He has held positions at the University of Illinois, Purdue University, the National Science Foundation, and has just joined the University of Delaware as a professor of electrical and computer engineering. His research interests include optimizing compilers, programming methodologies, tools, and performance evaluation for high-performance computing, as well as the design of cyberinfrastructure.
