Nanoscale Communication: The Next Frontier (Part 1)
Prof. Maurizio Magarini
Politecnico di Milano
Abstract:
Nanoscale communication is revolutionizing healthcare and biotechnology through molecular, intrabody, and DNA-based communications and storage. Molecular communication utilizes biological molecules for drug delivery and biosensing, while intrabody communication leverages the human body for precise diagnostics and neural interfacing. DNA-based communication and storage employ advanced coding methods for high-density data storage, bio-computing, and targeted therapeutic applications. These approaches enhance reliability and efficiency in molecular information transfer, contributing to next-generation biomedical networks and nanoscale systems. The talk explores the synergies between these fields, highlighting their transformative impact while addressing key research challenges and future directions.
Biography:
Maurizio Magarini received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electronic engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, in 1994 and 1999, respectively. He was a Research Associate at the Dipartimento di Elettronica, Informazione e Bioingegneria from 1999 to 2001, and served as Assistant Professor from 2001 to 2018. Since June 2018, he has been Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano. From August 2008 to January 2009, he spent a sabbatical at Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia) in New Jersey, USA. His research spans communication and information theory, with interests in synchronization, channel estimation, equalization, and coding for wireless, optical, molecular communication systems. Recent work includes reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, vehicular communications, mission-critical wireless sensor networks, advanced waveforms for 5GB/6G, UAV networks, and high-altitude platforms. He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers and holds three international patents. He received seven best paper awards. He is Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IET Electronics Letters, and Area Editor for Nano Communication Networks (Elsevier). He co-chaired ACM Nanocom 2024 and EAI Bodynet 2023, and was vice general chair of ACM Nanocom 2021.
