Biography

Jörg Eberspächer studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, where he earned the Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degrees in 1970 and 1976, respectively. From 1970 to 1977 he was member of the research staff at the Institute of Electrical Communications, University of Stuttgart. From 1977 to 1990 he was with Siemens AG, Munich, Germany, where he was responsible, in various positions, for research and development in the fields of high speed networks (LAN, ATM) and intelligent switch-computer cooperation. His last position at Siemens was manager of system planning. For many years he was active contributor to international standardization bodies, e.g., ANSI and ECMA. He was one of the fathers of the ANSI FDDI-2 Hybrid Ring standard and one of the promoters of the ECMA standard Computer Supported Telecommunication Applications for the intelligent Host-PBX-interconnection.
In 1990, Jörg Eberspächer was appointed full professor and, until his retirement in 2012, head of the Institute of Communication Networks at the Technical University Munich (TUM). From 2002 to 2005 he was dean of the department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (EI). Since 2012 he has been TUM Emeritus of Excellence.
Together with his research team he investigated and developed concepts, systems and applications in diverse areas of networking, i.e. selforganizing peer-to-peer and adhoc networks, network architecture and organization, network planning and optimization, 3G/4G wireless networks, optical networks, network security, techno-economics and automotive communication. His current interests are in interdisciplinary topics with the focus on the impact of digital technologies on society. Jörg Eberspächer is coauthor of the Wiley book GSM Global System for Mobile Communication, editor of several books on advanced topics in telecommunications and has authored or coauthored many papers on telecommunication networks and services. He was, for more than 10 years, editor for mobile networks of the journal European Transactions on Telecommunications (ETT) and has been serving as member of the scientific program committees of many international conferences.
Jörg Eberspächer was guest professor at the Tongji University in Shanghai, China and cofounder of the interdisciplinary Center for Digital Technology and Management (CDTM), Munich, where he is member of the board. He is life member IEEE, member ACM and honorary member VDE, fellow of VDE/ITG, member of the German National Scientific Academy Leopoldina and member of the German National Academy for Science and Engineering Acatech. 1997-1999 he was member of the board and 2000-2002 chairman of the German Information Technology Society (VDE/ITG). 2000 - 2002 he was member of the board of VDE. 2007-2015 he was chairman of the board of trustees of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), Berlin and 2002-2015 member of the board of trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication (FOCUS), Berlin. Since 2000, he is member of the scientific advisory board of the Wissenschaftliches Institut für Kommunikationsdienste (WIK), Bad Honnef. 2008–2017 he was chairman of the scientific advisory committee of the Lakeside Labs, Klagenfurt (Austria). From 2005-2016 he was member of the board of trustees of the Deutsches Museum, from which he received, in 2004, the Oskar-von-Miller-medal. From 1993-2014 he was member of the board and chairman of the research committee of the MÜNCHNER KREIS e.V.
