Central Car Server – Supercomputing for Automotive

Motivation

Digitalization enables the automation and networking of vehicles, opening up new options for mobility. This will be accompanied by a rapidly growing volume of data in the vehicle, which must be processed in near real time. The high demands on computing power, flexibility and efficiency require new approaches in microelectronics as well as in computer and software architecture. In order to achieve these goals, the strategic projects of the MANNHEIM funding guideline within the framework of the Automotive Industry Future Fund are to research high-performance computing platforms, novel vehicle architectures and future-proof software development processes and methods.

Goals and Approach

To cope with the enormous data volumes and for challenging computations in highly automated vehicles, this project investigates an automotive supercomputing platform. The central car server will be based on novel automotive-qualified high-performance processors in non-planar transistor technology (FinFET). Application-specific hardware accelerators and an adaptive software platform for autonomous vehicles will complement the processors. In this context, approaches for folded neural networks as well as event-based neuromorphic accelerators will be explored. Necessary adaptations of the on-board network will be considered, as well as an automotive-grade assembly and interconnection technology. The consortium aims to achieve full automotive qualification (ASIL-D) at system level.

Innovations and Perspectives

The innovative approaches of the project to high-performance computing architectures are a crucial building block of future vehicles. The project is thus making a significant contribution to Germany's technological sovereignty in autonomous driving. The technologies researched in MANNHEIM-CeCaS will enable the partners to maintain their leading position in the field of autonomous vehicles.
