Abstract:

Achieving higher data rates with energy efficiency constraints is becoming increasingly important. The visible trend towards this is the growing importance of wideband communications e.g. ultra wideband (UWB), mm-wave communications, and the significant focus towards research on energy efficient radio communications by the industry and regulatory bodies. This is evident from the emergence of the Green-touch consortium and the recommendation from ITU-T that all standardization has to be judged for energy efficiency. In short range wideband communication there is an increasing requirement of reduced power consumption and medium data rates of the order of 100 Mbps. Such requirements come from new applications wherein scalability of the power consumption with data rates is appealing as in next generation healthcare and personal space communications. Such systems need to be scalable to support a wide range of services with different data rates for variable number of users with variable quality of reliable communication/ service requirements (QoS). Hence, energy efficiency and scalability of data rate, QoS and users are attributes that are highly attractive in the context of flexible short range green communications.

This talk will present an enabling technology for energy efficient, scalable, medium data rate (~100 Mbps) wideband system design for short range. It will discuss the key concept for energy efficiency, scalability of power consumption with data rates, and related transceiver architecture. It will show the challenges and critical issues in system design related to interference and the possible technique that overcome these challenges. It presents performance results in single and multiuser scenario across different channel environment at link level, quantifies the amount of energy saving compared to existing wideband systems, and illustrates the efficacy of the proposed solution by comparing the performance with Multiband OFDM (MBOFDM) system. Finally, it will discuss open research problems associated to power efficient short range system design.
