The practical module teaches fundamental methods of Neuro-engineering across four topical elements, each supervised by a different member of the CoC NeuroEngineering. Students will undertake a hands-on practical assignment/tutorial for each of the four topics. Prior to commencing each topic, students will complete personal preparation with written material.

Topic supervised by AIP:

Prof. Seeber: Implementation of a brain-computer interface that uses neuronal measurements to control an acoustic beamformer that allows the user to ‘hear-out’ what they are looking at! Students will measure the visual electro-ocular response and use it control an acoustic beamformer in real-time.  
Examination for this topic will include: a) a short entrance-test on the preparatory material prior to commencing this topic, and b) ongoing in-lab assessments.  

Topics from other Chairs:  

Prof. Hemmert: Understanding, measuring, analyzing and interpreting brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). Students will record acoustically evoked BAEPs on each other, analyze the acquired data with Matlab (artifact rejection, filtering) and apply statistical methods to determine hearing thresholds from noisy signals. Final presentation of the data will be in a written report, which will be graded.

Prof. Cheng: Multi-channel EEG recording and analysis focused on cognitive mechanisms. The written report will be graded.
