Increased Traffic Safety via Intelligent Detection Technologies
In 2020, vehicles caused about 37,000 bicycle accidents and 17,000 pedestrian accidents with personal injuries. In order to realize a safe and CO2 neutral city, intelligent traffic control and the protection of vulnerable road users (VRUs) are necessary. Reliable detection of all road users and a trustworthy situation or hazard assessment are the basis for achieving these goals.
Goals and Approach
In the VIDETEC-2 project, new technologies based on micro-Doppler radar and on Communication, Localization and Surveillance (CLS) are being researched, developed and integrated into an intelligent road infrastructure. Both micro-Doppler radar and CLS technologies are investigated for accurate and reliable detection and localization of passive road users at urban intersections. In particular, CLS efficiently uses communication signals. The acquired traffic data helps Automated and Connected Vehicles (AVF) avoid collisions in urban road traffic. The goal of the project is to collect comprehensive radar and CLS data sets from real traffic situations, which are prerequisites for training customized AI models.
