Abstract:
This thesis investigates information rates of bandlimited short-haul fiber with direct detection. Detectors that exploit oversampling memory for phase retrieval are proposed. Bipolar modulation is shown to provide power gains of up to 3 decibels (dB) and 6 dB over unipolar modulation in unamplified and amplified links, respectively. For optically amplified links, the proposed message-passing detector operates within 0.26 bits per channel use of the real-alphabet coherent capacity.
