Intelligent BioRobotic Systems
The Chair of Intelligent Biorobotic Systems (IBRS), led by Prof. Lorenzo Masia, is part of the Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI). Prof. Masia also serves as the Executive Director of the institute. Located in the Siemens Technology Center, our laboratory focuses on cutting-edge research in exosuits — wearable robotic systems designed to support and enhance human movement.
But what exactly are exosuits? Unlike traditional exoskeletons, which are rigid and often take over the user’s movements, exosuits are soft, lightweight, and flexible. They work in harmony with the body, augmenting muscle activity rather than replacing it. Much like an e-bike, an exosuit assists and enhances endurance while allowing the user full control and autonomy.
At IBRS, we design and develop exosuits for both upper and lower limbs entirely in-house — from mechanical design and fabrication to control algorithms and system integration. Once developed, these systems are tested and applied across clinical, industrial, and everyday settings.
Our team is constantly advancing the state of wearable robotics and exploring new ideas. If our work inspires you, we welcome your interest — whether you’re a student eager to learn, a researcher pursuing new challenges, or a professional working in industry looking to collaborate.
