BT Cross-Platform Development of an Application for Travel Destination Management
We have developed DestiRec, a solution for travel destination recommendation. An earlier version of this application is published in [1] and available at https://destination-finder.netlify.app, a later version is at https://destirec.netlify.app. The idea is to specify preferences and receive relevant and fitting travel regions based on activities, budget, or possibly travel months. The region suitability is visualized in a map using colors.
The goal of this Bachelor’s Thesis project in Informatics (or related study programs) is not to focus on the recommendation algorithm, but to further develop this application towards the management of travel regions and cross-platform compatibility. So far, the application is a web-based system optimized for desktop access. The first goal is to make it more accessible on mobile devices by adapting the user interface. The other goal is to offer functions for personal management of travel regions. Ideas include managing already visited regions (possibly visualized by bold region borders), custom lists of favorite or bucket regions for future travel planning, and using the color scheme in the map for visualizing best times to travel for specified months etc. The solution should be tested in a small-scale user study at the end.
Prerequisites for this project are very good programming skills and some experience in cross-platform development of similar applications. The application was developed with the open-source JavaScript library ReactJS. Please send your application (brief CV, transcript of records, and short motivation statement including ReactJS experience) to Wolfgang Wörndl (woerndl@cit.tum.de) by March 20th, 2026, with a response and decision soon after. The actual start of the thesis project is flexible.
